Today, I stumbled across this article on FoxNews.com about the impending end of solar Cycle 23 and beginning of Cycle 24. Rising sunspot numbers are something that some dread to see coming 'round about every 11 years or so. Especially folks closer to the poles. With the rising sunspots come more solar storms which can have detrimental effects on power grids and any number of services that rely on satellites. GPS systems can lose accuracy, long power lines can have extra voltages induced, overhead phone lines can also get zapped. The GPS problems can cause other problems. Many ships rely on GPS for navigation. Floating oil rigs rely on GPS to maintain their position over the drill hole. However, for us Hams, rising sunspot numbers are a good ...

Lately there's been a lot of ruckus being raised by Democrats wanting the set a deadline for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. Although I'd like to see our troops come home, the fact of the matter is, if we pull them home today Iraq will inevitably descend into total anarchy and in that power vaccum, a government that is not in the least friendly to the US will eventually emerge. Is prevent such worth the lives of American men and women? Perhaps. That's a decision for wiser heads than mine. As I've mentioned in previous blogs, I'm totally offended by the rhetoric coming from the Democrat party on this issue. However, one thing in the spending bill the Democrat controlled Congress is poised to pass and President Bush is poised to immediately veto, is a good idea. This provision would withhold about $850 million in foreign aid from the Iraqis if the government does not meet certain standards.&nb ...

This blog post is related to my previous one. I'd like to join Sean Hannity in calling for all Republicans in the Senate to call for Sen. Reid to resign effective immediately. The dems don't hesitate to call on republicans to resign for any little thing that comes along. Take the hulla-balloo over the firings of the 8 federal prosecutors. The dems are screaming for blood on that one. Which is worse? The President firing some appointees, who, as appointees, serve at the pleasure of the President or the Senate Majority leader, saying publicly that the war is lost while we have men and women in harms way? Senator, I call on you to resign. No, I demand your resignation. Anyone who would spew such crap about their own country, to the unabashed glee of the enemy, does not deserve to be in a position of power.

This is absolutely unbelievable. It's one thing for Dingy Harry, as Rush calls him, to express such views to the President in private as part of a meeting, but it's a completely different matter for him to speak such to the press. Harry Reid might as well have gone to visit O'Sammy Been Hiding and tell him in person that he and his allies have defeated the greatest nation on Earth. It's totally scandalous for political leader to say in public, before the world press, that his nation has lost during war time. If I had my way, Dingy Harry would be brought up on charges of treason.

The U.S. Supreme Court finally got it right on an abortion issue. They've upheld, in a 5 to 4 vote, a law passed by congress and signed by the president that banned partial birth abortion, a procedure in which very late term babies are partially delivered and as soon as the head is exposed the baby is killed. Previous courts have said that any law banning any form of abortion that doesn't provide for the case in which the abortion could save the life of the mother would be considered un-constitutional. I'm glad to hear that the courts finally wised up on this particular issue. By the time the baby is killed in a partial birth abortion, there is absolutely no additional risk to the mother if the baby is fully delivered alive or dead.

Today I upgraded the site to DotNetNuke 4.5.1. After fixing a couple of problems that resulted from my own mistakes, I was able to get it up and running fairly easily. I don't like the way the latest version of the "Events" module looks so I removed that module until I can figure out how to style it to make it fit my site again. One "feature" in this version of DNN that I definitely do not like is a small "slim control bar" that is automatically inserted onto the top of any page on which a module exists which the user has edit permissions on. That "slim control bar" totally wrecked the look and feel of my site. It's supposed to allow users who are using the "in-line editing" feature to preview the changes without actually applying them. ...

According to this Fox News.com article, Professor Liviu Librescu, aged 76, was a hero. He sacrificed himself by blocking the doorway into his classroom, giving several of his students the opportunity to save themselves by jumping out of a window. As a holocaust survivor, Professor Librescu had long ago paid his dues, enduring hardship beyond what anyone should ever be asked to endure. Yet, he paid the ultimate price so that at least a few of his students could escape while Cho Seung-Hui, a campus student and native of South Korea, went on a rampage killing a total of 32 people before turning his gun on himself.

That's the most accurate and complete description I can come up with for people who deliberately target children. It's a tragedy when children get hurt. However, there's a huge difference between those who accidentally harm children in the course of trying to accomplish something that's in the interest of greater good and those who deliberately set out with the idea of hurting children. Why else would this perverse scum-bag have done what he did? The way this unknown subject (or un-sub as they're often called on crime investigation shows) set out with clear forethought and malice to try and harm children is sickening. I imagine these thoughts running through the un-sub's head: "What can I do to hurt one or more kids without getting caught? ...

After a very frustrating week and a half (guestimating) the site is finally back up. The problem turned out to be something that should have been easily rectified. The site went down because when the hosting provider installed a new server to replace the one that crashed they negelected to install ASP.Net 2.0. It took over a week for them to figure that out. Anyway, I'm glad it was such an easy fix. Too bad it took them so long to figure out what was wrong.
