According to this article, a NASA report indicates frequent alcohol use by shuttle pilots just prior to a mission.

I've heard it mentioned on a couple of different radio news programs already.  I have one question.  What's the big deal?  In all the missions the shuttles have flown there's been only two accidents.  In both of those cases the sobriety, or lack thereof, of the pilots was totally irrelevant.  Lord knows, a shot of Jim Beam would probably go a long way toward calming nerves.  Especially now that it's known that damage sufferered during launch can prevent the shuttle from returning safely.  Think about it folks... I think you'd have to be drunk, on Read More »

This is a brief article discussing, in part, a talk on Practices by Ivar Jacobson and David West at TechEd 2007 in Orlando.  The author's position is that instead of trying to hammer a dev team into a set process (scrum, xp, agile, etc.) one should be familiar enough with all of them so that one can pick and choose the best practices of each to form your own process that fits best with your team and possibly even on a project by project basis.

"Practices," at least in th ... Read More »

This just ticks me off.  Here's the short version:  In Elbert County Colorado, the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch has come under attack from anti-gun zealots.  This particular scout came has had a shooting range for years.  No one has ever complained before.  Then, some tree-hugging, anti-gun, weenies from the city moved into the area and complained to the cops.  It just happens that the sherrif is one of the rare law enforcement folks who are actually opposed to the 2nd amendment, having given numerous speeches in favor of banning private gun ownership.  The sherriff and those new neighbors of the camp are trying to prevent them from being re-issued a permit for the shooting range.

Today, at work, I was provided with a pair of really kickin' HP L1940T monitors.  So far I'm very impressed.  After I've had a while to get used to them, I'll be writing a review.  In the mean time, having these two monitors is going to spoil me and cause me to spend some $$$ at home.  These things are nice compared to the stock Dell monitor I had before and the WalMart (MusTek if memory serves) monitor I have at home.  Tonight I think I'll investigate the back side of the MusTek monitor and see if it'll be feasible to wall mount it.  If so, I'll likely end up getting a 2nd monitor for home.  Perhaps even one of these.

Just another update.  Click here for my previous post.  Anyway, Dad's doing much better, praise God!  For the first time in weeks he's able to walk to and from the kitchen without getting out of breath.  He's got an appointment with a pulmologist, lung doctor, today to see about finding out what actually happened.  In one of his chest x-rays they saw a "spot" that didn't look like pnumonia.  It could be scarring from a previous episode of respiratory problems he'd had.  Hopefully that's all it is.  Keep him in your prayers.

This past Friday afternoon, I worked an interesting and rare DX contact.  1A0KM, the Soverign Military Order of Malta.  I probably wouldn't have worked them if not for a phone call from my friend KR4JY.  He called me and alerted me to the fact that they were on the air.  1A0KM was coming in strong on 14.185 MHz.  They were initially working a split, up to 14.290.  I tried calling two or three times and got stepped on each time by one of the big guns running bigger antennas and/or greater power than I.  Then, the operator changed the split to "14.290 and up".  When he did that I changed my transmit frequency to 14.292.5 and called.  Got him on the first try!  59 signal report!

What kind of sick, psycho, hose-beast of a "mother" would do something like this?  Every time I hear about something like this happening I find myself more and more in agreement with Pastor Arnold Murray when he says that he believes that the 1/3 of God's children who followed Satan when he rebelled are mostly alive today.  That would explain such crap as a so-called "mother" setting her own baby on fire.  I can't think of a much more painful, horrible way to die.  This... female... couldn't possibly have been trying to spare the baby a life.  If that were the case there are many infinitely more humane ways.  She didn't want to spare the baby any pain or suffering.  She obviously wanted the child to suffer horribly.  Why else would she have torched the kid ... Well, lst night I logged my longest DX contact so far.  Over 7000 km over to French Polynesia.  I only had to call the guy once to get him to come back.  He gave me a 52 signal report.  Not the best sig report but hey, I got him on my first try!  I didn't have to call him until my throat was dry while listening to him give reports to other folks.  That's a pretty good feeling.

Equipment Issues

As I mentioned in this blog entry, I recently had a failure in one of my antenna switches, specifically, the one that allows me to choose between my dipole or my beam for HF.   Well, that problem seems to have resolved itself just as spontaneously as it fir manifested itself.    Since I don't know why the failure occurred in the first place, I'm probably going to replace that switch anyway just to be on the safe side.  It's possible there's some kind of intermittant issue that could easily rear it's ugly head again.  In the mean time, I'll continue using it between now and the time KG4PNL can get back up to my QTH and climb the tower.

Fun Fun...

Over the past week, since the above mentioned problem solved itself, I've been havi ... Read More »
